I’m pleased to announce that we have been able to add an extra event to the programme.
Ken Garland and Huda Smitshuijzen Abifares have both kindly agreed to come to Barcelona and stage a conversation between them. This will take place at 1630h on the Thursday 8 September. I have heard both of them speak on occasion and can confirm that they individually present interesting and compelling ideas on activist approaches to graphic design. To put them together in conversation is even better!
Huda Smitshuijzen Abifares is founder-director of the Khatt Foundation. She was born in Beirut. Author of Arabic Typography: a comprehensive sourcebook (Saqi Books, London, 2001), Experimental Arabic Type (Saatchi & Saatchi, Dubai, 2002), Typographic Matchmaking (BIS Publishers, Amsterdam 2007), Typographic Matchmaking in the City (Khatt Books, Amsterdam 2011), and a number of articles on multilingual communication and contemporary design in the Middle East.
In 1964, Ken Garland authored the First Things First manifesto in which he drew attention to the subservience of graphic design to advertising and called for a more humanistic approach to graphic design theory. This manifesto was re-visited in 2000. He continues to practice as a designer and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Brighton. See interview in Eye.
